Excited to be in the Lubbock Arts Festival Juried Show. Come out and check it out April 10th - 13th.  Here is my entry of a Quahadi Native American, a band of the Comanche.

Loved painting this one.  I actually did a lot of research into Quahadi (Native West Texans) and created a preliminary sculpture bust of this guy's head so I could understand facial features and structure before I painted him.

Hope to do some more of paintings of Comanche in the future.  They are such an integral part of Texas History.

50th Wedding Anniversary

I recently had the privilege of working on a commission for this piece.  Married in Germany after WWII 50 years ago.

Barbara

Barbara from our session last week.

This was done on a larger format than my previous portrait sketches (9x12) and allowed a bit more room to lay in a design.  I really enjoyed this one.  I tried to focus on not using black for darks and really explore what color I saw. I found there were a lot of lost and found edges in her hair so it was fun to play with the brush strokes to imitate the subtle change of light that I saw.

Casey

The Lubbock Figure Drawing Group went down to the Downtown Art Market at the Tornado gallery and drew Casey today. If you haven't been to the DAM, if you're in Lubbock stop by some time, it's a great farmers/art communal market.

It was hot, but we had a great time. Thanks to everyone who stopped by and all who showed up. This was our last session of the day, 1 hour pose.

Caesar

This was a portrait of Caesar from our May 8th Session.  I took it home and touched it up a bit, so 3 hours plus an hour or so of additional work.  I'm trying to focus on getting the correct colors during the intial stages, I find it's very important to nail those colors down and stick to them, else you'll be chasing your tail the whole time.

Lubbock Figure Drawing Group

I started organizing the Lubbock Figure Drawing Group this month. We meet every Wednesday from 6-9pm and alternate from figure drawing to portraits. We have new topics every week to discuss and learn from in order to improve our sketching.

Last 2 sessions have covered the "Secret Squint" and Loomis' book, Figure Drawing for All It's worth. Next week we're going to start looking at Loomis' book, Drawing the Head and Hands.

Future topics include, edges, transitions, color temperature, flow, and tons more.

Facebook Group is under 'Lubbock Figure Drawing Group'.

If you get a chance come by, it's been lots of fun so far. We will be moving to the LHUCA Graffiti building starting on September 1st.

Another Orange Set

I tried a red ground on this one. It makes the shadows of the oranges come out better and adds to the overall color harmony.

I had fun forming the oranges and feel like my values are getting better. On to the next.

Oranges

Stayed up late doing this one. Loose yet defined, it's headed where I'd like to take it. Like the values and color temps but I find as soon as I concentrate on those two things, I start to lose my design.

Next chance I get, I'm going to try drawing first and then paint and see if I can straighten out my values and design before I hit the color.

New start

Looking forward to my new start in updating this blog. Hope to have many more paintings to come in the future.

I need to try to shoot for more color harmony and probably a little less Alizarin.

Carol Marine an inspiration on this one, great artist in Austin, http://carolmarine.blogspot.com/.

Figure Drawing from Susan Lyon's Class

(15 - 20 minutes)

Here are some drawings I did at the Weekend with the Master's last weekend in Susan Lyon's figure drawing class.

It was a great event. I got to meet lots of great artists and see how they paint. Jeremy Lipking, David Leffel, Frank Serrano, Scott Burdick, Scott Christensen, Skip Whitcomb, to name a few.

Katrina

(15 minute)

The poses were too quick to do anything but mix and apply. Concentrated on values and color temps. Lots of fun to do.

Jar and Limes

I have to admit, Qiang-Huang was an inspiration on this one. Great artist in Austin if you want to check him out, http://qiang-huang.blogspot.com/.
